‘Hitchens in Hell Because god Loved Him’

December 19, 2011 in Atheism, Belief, bible, christianity, Christopher Hitchens, Ethics, Faith, Morality, Reason, Religion

On Thursday, December 15, Christopher Hitchens passed away, succumbing to pneumonia, a complication of his esophageal cancer. One of the Four Horsemen of Atheism, Hitch was a long-time opponent of religion, which seems to have made him an individual with whom the religious are making a point: if you are an atheist, you are going to hell; not that this is news to those who consider themselves to be atheists. I certainly can’t say any of the hysteria from the religious, especially from the christian community, but I do want to discuss one argument in particular, put forward by Bryan Fischer of the christian group The American Family Association (AFA). In a video made available by RightWingWatch.org, Fischer tells the word that Hitch is in hell because the christian god loves him. You can find the video below:

First, Fischer has no reason to believe Hitchens was anything other than resolute and steadfast in his atheism, right to the bitter end. Read the rest of this entry →

Please note: Bill 14 should read Bill 13. (December 14, 2011)

There has been a battle being waged in Ontario for the past year between those who support TBGLQ rights, including the provincial government of Ontario, Canada, lead by Premier Dalton McGuinty, and those who are stubbornly dedicated to denying to members of the TBGLQ community the complete corpus of rights to which they believe nearly everyone else should be entitled to, the chief representatives of this group being the roman catholic church (RCC) and the Institute for Canadian Values (ICV), lead by the evangelical christian Charles H. McVety, whose father founded the Canada Christian College (CCC). Before I address the controversy at play, I would like to focus on the rationale for the Ontario government’s Anti-Bullying Act (ABA), or Bill 14. Read the rest of this entry →

End Homophobia, Save Lives

Long after the original court decision that prohibited Catholic Charities in the dioceses of Joliet, Springfield and Belleville of Illinois from continuing to offer child adoptive and fostering services that discriminate against couples from the TBGLQ community as well as unmarried straight couples, Catholic Charities in Illinois is finally admitting defeat. That’s right! From now on none of us will be pestered by this hateful organization petitioning to have laws bent in such a manner that they be allowed to continue to discriminate against anyone their unsophisticated, immature and dishonest theology singles out as being ‘evil’ or egregiously sinful. During this time, Ben took the opportunity to address a number of issues relevant with current events, including the subject of why Christians impose their values on others, the concept of ‘personhood’ and women’s rights. English Philosopher Peter Millican
On October 17, 2011, William Lane Craig (WLC) kicked off his Reasonable Faith Tour in the United Kingdom by debating Stephen Law at Westminster Central Hall; a debate which I discussed and analyzed here on October 23. But on October 21, 2011, WLC debated Oxford University professor of philosophy Peter Millican (PM) at Birmingham University‘s Great Hall. With over 1000 people in attendance, WLC and PM debated the existence of god…kind of.

And this ‘kind of’ really speaks to some of my fundamental challenges with debates. Read the rest of this entry →
