Pope Ben-the-Dick: Charlatan and Hypocrite

January 9, 2012 in Atheism, Belief, bible, Catholic Church, christianity, Education, god, Human Rights, News, Philosophy, pope, pope Benedict XVI, Reason, Religion, Religious Persons

Pope Ben-the-Dick spoke to the Vatican Diplomatic Corps today, in which he essentially censured countries around the world today for failing to adhere to the word and command of the roman catholic god – I would have written ‘christian god’ rather than ‘roman catholic god,’ but as the Pope has argued in the past, no other catholic or christian community is on the correct path of understanding and ethical living (see this post). This world is in this present state of discord and uncertainty because, according to this hater par excellence: people are ignoring god and their relationship with god; freedom of religion is being denied to many people around the world; and, abandoning roman catholic ethics for an ethics of secularism and selfishness (these latter two can be regarded under the rubric of human rights). Ben betrays his willful ignorance and ever-burning contempt for those who do not fall in line, and I hope to examine these issues I have just identified, making explicit reference to Ben’s speech (not relying on the reporting or accounts of others), in order to show just how much of a charlatan, hypocrite and ethically bankrupt individual this imp is.

The War on Christmas & Christianity’s Privileged Position

December 23, 2011 in Atheism, Belief, Catholic Church, christianity, Ethics, Morality, Philosophy, Reason, Religion, Religious Persons, Social Justice

Jack Kerwick recently wrote a post for the website The Moral Liberal, titled Christianity, Christmas, and the Grinch’s Unsuccessful War, in which he claims “christophobes” are launching a war on Christmas, albeit a war he considers to be completely ineffectual, not to mention inappropriate. The war on Christmas, he argues, fails because its opponents lack the grit and the intelligence required to be successful on this front. This war on Christmas is also inappropriate, he argues, because christianity has and is entitled to a privileged position in society, and thus an affront to Christmas is an affront to christian and the respect we are to show for this religion.

‘Hitchens in Hell Because god Loved Him’

December 19, 2011 in Atheism, Belief, bible, christianity, Christopher Hitchens, Ethics, Faith, Morality, Reason, Religion

On Thursday, December 15, Christopher Hitchens passed away, succumbing to pneumonia, a complication of his esophageal cancer. One of the Four Horsemen of Atheism, Hitch was a long-time opponent of religion, which seems to have made him an individual with whom the religious are making a point: if you are an atheist, you are going to hell; not that this is news to those who consider themselves to be atheists. I certainly can’t say any of the hysteria from the religious, especially from the christian community, but I do want to discuss one argument in particular, put forward by Bryan Fischer of the christian group The American Family Association (AFA). In a video made available by RightWingWatch.org, Fischer tells the word that Hitch is in hell because the christian god loves him. You can find the video below:

First, Fischer has no reason to believe Hitchens was anything other than resolute and steadfast in his atheism, right to the bitter end. Read the rest of this entry →

La Salette Journey’s Paul Melanson and Friends: Ignorant and Cowardly

December 6, 2011 in Atheism, Belief, Catholic Church, christianity, Defection, On Reason Podcast, Philosophy, Reason, Religion, Religious Persons

I ardently believe that one of the inherent challenges with roman catholics (herein ‘catholics’), in general, is their profound general sense of ignorance. I have commented in numerous posts, like Catholislam, that catholics are not encouraged to think critically or to enter into dialogues with those who have opposing positions. One of the things I do when I am writing posts is to provide as much justification as possible, like references to sources, for the things I say. Now, the content of this blog post is catholic ignorance and cowardice, so I figure I should start getting into my justification. Read the rest of this entry →

Christians aren’t known for being the most reasonable of people, and Robert Knight, writer for The Washington Times, is no exception. In his article Holy Rudolph? ‘Tis the season for Christmas phobia, Knight describes atheists as being fragile and made of glass, unable to handle or cope with representations of christianity in public, whether these representations are concerned with Christmas, the christian god, the ten commandments or even their ‘saviour’ Jesus. Whether it be atheists fighting to have religious representations removed from public places or refusing to allow christian values and perspectives determine how they live their lives, Knight describes atheists and their enablers as pathetic and the worldview they promote as being a virus.
